PRP hair treatment
Hair that is gradually becoming thinner, density that is no longer what it was a few years ago, and areas of the scalp where regrowth is becoming increasingly sparse.
Hair loss is one of the conditions that has the greatest impact on self-esteem and quality of life, yet it is often addressed too late or with inadequate treatments. The PRP hair treatment (or PRGF hair treatment) is now one of the most advanced and well-documented approaches to follicular regeneration: it uses growth factors present in the patient’s own blood to reactivate the follicles, slow down hair loss and stimulate natural, progressive regrowth.
What is PRP/PRGF hair treatment and how does it work?
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) and PRGF (Plasma Rich in Growth Factors) are two variants of an autologous biological approach that utilises the regenerative proteins naturally present in the patient’s blood. At Studio Garavaglia, we use PRGF prepared using the BTI centrifuge, a controlled centrifugation system that precisely isolates the plasma fraction with the highest concentration of growth factors, ensuring optimal quality and concentration at every session.
The principle is simple: growth factors are proteins that our body naturally uses to repair and regenerate tissues. Once concentrated and injected directly into the scalp, they trigger a powerful, localised regenerative response within the hair follicles. They help prolong the hair’s active growth phase, improve the blood supply around the follicles, reduce the chronic inflammation that accelerates follicular miniaturisation and – when the follicles are still viable – stimulate the formation of new hair bulbs.
As it is autologous, the treatment carries no risk of an allergic reaction or rejection.
Who is the PRP/PRGF hair treatment suitable for?
The PRGF hair treatment in aesthetic medicine is recommended for a variety of conditions affecting hair density and quality:
Male androgenetic alopecia
This is the main indication. Male pattern hair loss, the classic thinning that affects the forehead and crown, responds well to PRGF in the early and intermediate stages, when the hair follicles are still present and viable. The treatment slows down the progression of hair loss and, in many cases, stimulates regrowth in areas where the hair is thinning. In completely atrophied follicles, the treatment has limited effectiveness: early intervention is always the most effective option.
Female androgenetic alopecia
Female hair thinning, which typically presents as diffuse thinning on the crown of the head whilst the hairline remains intact, responds just as well to PRP/PRGF treatment. Women going through perimenopause or the menopause, when the drop in oestrogen accelerates hair thinning, find this treatment to be a valuable natural aid, often combined with a specialist hormonal assessment.
Telogen effluvium and stress-related hair loss
Acute hair loss linked to intense physical or psychological stress, nutritional deficiencies or traumatic events may benefit from PRGF as a means of accelerating follicular recovery. The treatment supports the regrowth phase, reducing recovery time and improving hair quality.
Weak and thinning hair
Even in the absence of significant hair loss, PRGF is recommended for those whose hair is becoming progressively thinner, more brittle and lacking in vitality. Growth factors nourish the hair bulb, improve the quality of the hair shaft and restore the hair’s strength and visible density.
How the session is conducted
Blood sample
The treatment begins with a small sample of venous blood being taken from the patient’s arm, in exactly the same way as a standard blood test. The amount taken is minimal and does not cause any significant discomfort.
Centrifugation using BTI
The blood is processed in the BTI centrifuge, which precisely separates the blood components and isolates the plasma fraction richest in growth factors. The process ensures an optimal and reproducible concentration in every session, which is essential for the quality and consistency of the results.
Microinjections into the scalp
The concentrated plasma is administered via microinjections into the scalp, in areas of thinning and across the entire surface to be treated. A topical anaesthetic may be applied before the injections to ensure maximum comfort. The procedure is minimally invasive and well tolerated: slight redness of the scalp may persist for a few hours afterwards but resolves on its own.
There is no recovery time required: the patient can wash their hair and resume their normal daily activities as early as the following day.
PRP for hair: visible and progressive results
The results of the PRP/PRGF hair treatment are gradual and build up over the course of the treatment cycle. The first signs of improvement (a reduction in daily hair loss, hair that feels stronger to the touch) are generally noticeable after the second session. Visible regrowth, when it occurs, begins to appear from the sixth to eighth week after the start of the treatment programme and continues to become more established in the months following the final session.
It is important to have realistic expectations: PRGF cannot regrow hair from completely atrophied follicles. It acts on follicles that are still viable, prolonging their activity and improving their output. The earlier action is taken in relation to the onset of thinning, the more satisfactory the results will be.
Comprehensive PRP/PRGF hair treatment programme: protocol and aftercare
The standard course consists of three sessions, each one a month apart, with the timing tailored to the biological cycle of follicular regeneration. Each session enhances and consolidates the effects of the previous one, through a cumulative regenerative process that reaches its peak in the weeks following the final injection.
At the end of the initial course of treatment, regular maintenance sessions – usually 1–2 per year – help to maintain the results achieved and to adapt the treatment plan to changes in the patient’s clinical condition. The personalised PRP/PRGF treatment complements scalp mesotherapy and biorevitalisation naturally, forming a comprehensive protocol that addresses all aspects of follicular health.

Why choose Studio Garavaglia?
The effectiveness of PRGF hair treatment depends on two key factors: the quality of the plasma prepared and the experience of the person administering it. Dr Garavaglia carries out every treatment himself, tailoring the most appropriate treatment plan to each patient’s clinical condition.
Hair loss often has a significant emotional aspect. For this reason, every treatment journey begins with listening: understanding the history of the hair thinning, the patient’s expectations, and developing a realistic and effective treatment plan is the foundation of achieving meaningful results.

FAQ: frequently asked questions about PRP/PRGF for hair
What is the difference between PRP and PRGF for hair?
Does PRP/PRGF hair treatment really work?
Yes, for follicles that are still viable. PRGF is supported by a robust body of scientific literature regarding its use in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in its early and intermediate stages. The results in terms of reducing hair loss and improving hair quality are documented and reproducible. Regrowth depends on the degree of residual follicular vitality: early intervention maximises the chances of success.
