Restore lost volume, smooth out a deep wrinkle, define the lip contour or reshape the cheekbones.

Facial fillers are one of the most versatile and precise tools in modern aesthetic medicine: through micro-injections of certified, absorbable substances, they enable treatment of the face with immediate, natural and reversible results, without the need for surgery and with no significant recovery time. A personalised facial filler treatment, when carried out by the right practitioner, transforms the face without altering its natural features.

What is a facial filler and how does it work?

Facial fillers are a non-surgical treatment involving the intradermal administration of certified resorbable substances, injected using precision needles or microcannulas into the areas of the face to be treated. The materials used are approved and completely safe: they take effect immediately, restoring lost volume or smoothing out wrinkles from within, and are gradually reabsorbed by the body over the following months.

The duration of the effect in the treated area varies from patient to patient, with an average of around 9 months; this can vary significantly depending on the type of product, the injection site and the individual’s metabolism.

At our clinic in Milan, personalised facial filler treatments are prescribed and carried out by Dr Garavaglia, following a thorough preliminary assessment to determine the most suitable product, the injection technique and the areas to be treated, ensuring a harmonious and natural result.

The ingredients we use: hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxyapatite

The choice of the most suitable product depends on the area to be treated, the depth of treatment and the aesthetic goal. At our centre, we use two types of dermal fillers, both of which are certified and biodegradable:

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is the gold standard for facial filler treatments: it is naturally present in all living organisms, which makes it highly biocompatible and virtually free from any risk of allergic reactions. In its cross-linked formulations, which vary in density depending on the area of application, it is used both to fill superficial and deep wrinkles and to create and restore volume. Hyaluronic acid facial fillers offer immediate, adjustable and reversible results for nasolabial folds, the lip contour and to restore volume to the cheeks: if necessary, they can be dissolved using hyaluronidase at any time.

Calcium hydroxyapatite (Radiesse)

Radiesse is a filler based on calcium hydroxyapatite, a mineral found naturally in bones. As well as providing an immediate volumising and smoothing effect, it has a unique property: it stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen in the treated area, resulting in a gradual regenerative effect that complements the immediate aesthetic result. It is particularly suitable for areas requiring greater structural support, such as the cheekbones and the jawline.

Where can facial fillers be used?

The filler is a highly precise instrument that can be adapted to different areas of the face, each with its own specific technical characteristics:

Lip fillers

Lip fillers are one of the most popular treatments. It helps to increase volume, redefine contours, correct asymmetry and reduce perioral wrinkles. The aim is always a natural-looking lip filler: fuller, more defined lips, not an artificial look. The amount of product used and the injection technique are tailored to the natural shape of each patient’s lips.

Cheekbone fillers

Cheekbone fillers target the most prominent part of the face, redefining the facial contour, restoring volume lost through ageing and restoring the facial bone structure that tends to flatten over the years. The result is a harmonious contour, with a natural lifting effect on the surrounding tissues that enhances the overall appearance of the face without the need for surgery.

Fillers for nasolabial folds and marionette lines

Nasolabial folds are the creases that run down from the nose towards the mouth, whilst marionette lines are those that extend downwards from the sides of the mouth. They are among the earliest and most noticeable signs of ageing. Facial fillers for the treatment of nasolabial folds work by smoothing out the crease and restoring lost volume in the mid-face area, producing an immediate and natural rejuvenating effect.

Eye contour fillers

Fillers around the eyes, and particularly in the tear trough, are a gentle yet highly effective treatment: they reduce deep dark circles, soften the appearance of tired eyes and restore volume to an area that tends to hollow out with age. It requires a high level of technical expertise and is one of the treatments with the most favourable balance between results and invasiveness in aesthetic medicine.

Nose fillers

Nose fillers, also known as non-surgical rhinoplasty, allow you to correct minor irregularities in the shape of the nose, lower or raise the tip, and conceal bumps or asymmetries, without any surgery. The results are immediate and reversible, and the precision of the procedure has made this treatment one of the most popular alternatives to traditional rhinoplasty.

Mandibular and chin contouring

Fillers injected into the chin and mandibular contour area act on the facial framework, defining the facial oval, balancing the proportions and correcting the projection of the chin. This treatment is particularly sought after by those looking to reshape their profile without surgery, offering harmonious and long-lasting results.

How does a facial filler treatment work?

The session begins with a facial assessment to analyse facial volume, bone structure, skin quality and the patient’s expectations, and to determine the most suitable treatment plan. A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the areas to be treated to minimise any discomfort. The injections are then administered using precision needles or microcannulas, following a personalised injection plan.

The session lasts about 20 minutes. After the procedure, it is normal to experience slight localised swelling or redness, which resolves spontaneously within 24–48 hours. The result is immediately visible, and becomes even more pronounced over the following days as the product is absorbed into the skin.

There is no recovery time required: most patients resume their normal daily activities immediately after the session.

Natural facial fillers: what to expect

The result of a successful filler treatment is not visible – or rather, it is not recognisable as such.
The face looks fresher, younger and more balanced. This is the guiding principle behind every treatment at Studio Garavaglia.

The results are immediate and gradual: the post-injection swelling subsides within the first 48 hours, giving way to the final result. The duration varies depending on the product used, the area treated and the individual’s metabolism, with an average of around 9 months, which can extend to 12–18 months in areas with less muscle movement.

Personalised facial filler treatment

Facial fillers provide the best results when incorporated into a broader aesthetic medicine treatment plan. Facial fillers combined with biorevitalisation guarantee excellent results: the fillers address volume loss and static wrinkles, whilst biorevitalisation improves the skin’s intrinsic qualities – hydration, texture and radiance – resulting in a more comprehensive and natural overall effect.

Depending on the patient’s needs, the treatment plan may be combined with botulinum toxin for dynamic wrinkles, PDO threads for structural tissue support, or laser treatments for skin discolouration and skin quality. Dr Garavaglia assesses the most suitable combination on a case-by-case basis, with the aim of achieving a harmonious and personalised facial filler treatment and overall rejuvenation.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about facial fillers

Yes. The products used at Studio Garavaglia are certified, approved and resorbable. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the body and is highly biocompatible. Radiesse is also approved and has been extensively documented. The safety of the treatment also depends on the doctor’s experience: injections into vascular areas require precise anatomical knowledge and a well-established technique.
The inconvenience is minimal. A topical anaesthetic cream is applied before the injections, and many products already contain lidocaine in their formulation. The session lasts about 20 minutes and does not require any recovery time.
On average, around 9 months, although this can vary significantly depending on the area treated, the type of product and the individual’s metabolism. Areas with greater muscle movement, such as the lips, tend to absorb the filler more quickly than more static areas such as the cheekbones.

A treatment carried out correctly should not be noticeable. The ideal result is a fresher, more balanced face, not an artificial or puffy appearance. The amount of product used and the injection technique are always tailored to achieve a natural-looking result.

Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved at any time with an injection of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that accelerates the reabsorption of the product. Radiesse cannot be reversed using this method, but it is naturally reabsorbed by the body over time.
The cost varies depending on the area treated, the type of product used and the quantity required. During the consultation, Dr Garavaglia explains the available options and the associated costs in a transparent manner and without obligation.
