Hair loss and alopecia

personalised programmes for healthier, stronger hair
Gradually thinning hair, strands left behind on your pillow or collecting in the sink, and hair that no longer has the same density it once had.

Hair loss is a problem that affects millions of people. It mainly affects men, but is increasingly affecting women as well. Living with this condition is rarely as straightforward as it should be. Yet today, aesthetic medicine offers specific treatments to slow down hair loss, stimulate regrowth and improve the quality of existing hair: these are not mere promises, but clinical protocols with documented results.

Hair loss: understanding the issue before taking action

Hair loss is not the same for everyone. Before starting any treatment, it is essential to identify the cause of hair thinning, in order to distinguish between the different forms of alopecia and to choose the most effective course of treatment for each individual patient.

Androgenetic alopecia

It is the most common cause of progressive hair loss in both men and women. It has a genetic and hormonal basis: the hair follicles in the affected areas are sensitive to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone which causes them to gradually miniaturise until they atrophy. In men, it typically manifests as thinning at the front and on the crown; in women, as diffuse thinning on the top of the head. Although it is not a medical condition in the strict sense, androgenetic alopecia is progressive and, if left untreated, tends to worsen over time.

Alopecia caused by stress and nutritional deficiencies

Periods of severe physical or psychological stress, as well as deficiencies in iron, zinc, vitamin D or protein can weaken the hair’s life cycle and trigger widespread hair loss, known as telogen effluvium. Unlike androgenetic alopecia, this form is often reversible, but requires prompt treatment to limit the damage and support regrowth.

Weak and brittle hair

Hair loss is not always severe: many patients present with hair that is gradually thinning, losing its density and shine, and breaking easily. It is a condition that often precedes more pronounced hair thinning and responds very well to aesthetic hair treatments designed to strengthen the hair shaft and revitalise the hair bulb.

Hair loss treatment: what aesthetic medicine has to offer today

To tackle hair loss effectively, you need treatments that act directly on the scalp and hair follicles, stimulating the biological mechanisms that regulate hair growth.

At our aesthetic medicine clinic in Milan, every hair loss treatment programme is personalised, beginning with a precise clinical diagnosis and tailored to the patient’s specific characteristics: the cause of hair loss, the extent of thinning, the quality of the remaining hair, and realistic treatment objectives.

Trichological mesotherapy

Mesotherapy for hair loss is one of the most effective and well-established treatments in aesthetic medicine. It involves administering micro-injections of active ingredients directly into the scalp: growth factors, vitamins, amino acids, peptides and vasodilators that nourish the follicles, improve local microcirculation and prolong the active growth phase of the hair. It is recommended both for strengthening brittle and thinning hair and for slowing the progression of androgenetic alopecia. The results? Improved hair quality, reduced hair loss and, in many cases, stimulation of regrowth, which become apparent over the course of the sessions, with the effects becoming more pronounced over time.

PRGF – Plasma Rich in Growth Factors

PRGF, when applied to the scalp, is one of the most advanced approaches to treating hair loss. Starting with a venous blood sample taken from the patient, the plasma fraction with the highest concentration of growth factors is isolated and then reinjected into the scalp in the areas of thinning hair. Autologous growth factors act directly on the hair follicles, prolonging their active phase, stimulating perifollicular vascularisation and promoting the regrowth of stronger, healthier hair. It is a biological treatment, entirely autologous and free from any risk of allergic reaction, producing natural and gradual results. Particularly suitable for androgenetic alopecia in the early and intermediate stages, in both men and women.

Personalised hair care programme: from diagnosis to results

Progressive thinning cannot be treated with a single standardised treatment. What works is a structured programme, based on a thorough clinical assessment of the scalp and hair, and adapted over time according to the patient’s individual response.

Hair loss treatment: what to really expect

Aesthetic hair treatments are carried out with precision, using protocols of proven effectiveness. The results of the treatments are genuine and documented, but they require time, perseverance and realistic expectations based on the initial situation.

Hair loss gradually decreases over the course of the first few sessions. The quality of the hair (thickness, strength, shine) improves noticeably even whilst the treatment is underway. Regrowth, where present, becomes visible in the weeks following the first sessions and becomes more established over time. Follicles that have completely atrophied cannot be restored: taking early action, whilst hair thinning is still in its early stages, is always the most effective approach.

FAQ: frequently asked questions about hair loss

A normal amount of hair loss is between 50 and 100 hairs a day. If hair loss consistently exceeds this threshold, or if you notice progressive thinning in specific areas, you should seek medical advice.
There is no cure, but its progression can be significantly slowed down. Aesthetic medicine treatments such as mesotherapy and PRGF target follicles that are still active, prolonging their vitality and reducing hair loss. Intervening at an early stage makes it possible to preserve the existing density and, in many cases, to stimulate partial regrowth.
Yes. Female hair thinning responds well to the same treatment protocols used for men, with specific adjustments depending on the cause and the characteristics of the hair. Mesotherapy and PRGF are also recommended for women with androgenetic alopecia or hair loss caused by stress and nutritional deficiencies.
The first improvements in hair quality are generally noticeable after 3–4 sessions. A full course of treatment typically consists of 6–8 sessions, followed by periodic maintenance sessions. Regrowth, when it occurs, becomes visible from the sixth to the eighth week after the start of treatment.
Micro-injections into the scalp are carried out using very fine needles and are generally well tolerated. A topical anaesthetic can be applied to the most sensitive areas. There is no recovery time: the patient can resume their normal activities immediately after the session.
