Hyperpigmentation refers to an alteration in skin colour caused by an abnormal accumulation of melanin. The excessive production of this substance can derive from improper exposure to sunlight, hormonal imbalances, diseases and hereditary genetic factors. The resulting dark spots are mainly located on the face, décolletage, and back of the hands, but can also occur on the upper limbs and torso.
